Ibiza
This is indeed an amazing place! In the past it had the reputation as a magnet for hippies as well as the rich and famous. Now it's the number one destination for the club scene at a level which Kavos, Faliraki and Aya Napa can certainly not even aspire to!
However there is more to Ibiza than this. The town itself is wonderful and has changed little over the years with its historic buildings clinging to the hill that leads to the church. The streets are narrow, colourful and interesting, packed with shops, bars and boutiques. Predictably the harbour front is lined with restaurants.
San Antonio town is the focus for clubbing and in the high season (June to August), the town and its basic accommodation, is usually filled to capacity. This is not the destination for a peaceful relaxing holiday!
The bay of San Antonio however potentially is, with a range of hotels and apartments catering for families and couples and excellent beaches a short boat ride away as an alternative to those by the hotels.
On the east coast we have a contrast to the bustle of San Antonio in the resorts around Santa Eulalia. Es Canar, Cala Llonga and S'Argamassa all have good beaches, particularly Es Cana and Cala Llonga, while the town of Santa Eulalia is very Spanish and full of bars, restaurants and shops to keep you busy.
Portinatx in the north is worth a visit, as indeed are our rural hotels in truly magnificent scenic surroundings. These traditional hotels, usually family run, offer extremely high standards of service and accommodation in stunning surroundings yet with all the amenities you would expect, including swimming pools, terraces and fabulous gardens. These are the places to go to escape from the world or for a quiet family holiday yet within easy reach of the beach
The resorts nearest the town are Playa D'en Bossa, which is lively and has a good beach and the more tranquil Talamanca, just across the bay from the capital.
Majorca
It is easy to see why this is the biggest holiday air destination from the UK . An extremely beautiful island with fabulous beaches and scenery, overlooked by dramatic pine covered mountains running the length of the west coast from Formentor in the north to Andratx in the south.
Puerto Pollensa is the place to “chill out”. Set on an excellent beach with a mountain backdrop, this resort fits the bill for families looking for a quiet time, or indeed couples wanting to get away from it all. There is a nice Spanish feel to the town with plenty of shops, good restaurants and bars.
Just a However , if you want to discover the real Majorca, visit our 5 extraordinary rural hotels set in areas of outstanding natural beauty away from busy resorts and towns.
These are often historic buildings but beautifully decorated with all the modern comforts and facilities that the discerning traveller would expect. In all cases typically charming Majorcan towns are nearby to explore or to enjoy a meal out in local surroundings.
Just around the corner in an even more dramatic location, Cala San Vicente encircled by mountains, features two sandy coves, with a few hotels and bars.
There is something for everyone here. The capital, Palma , is a cosmopolitan town steeped in history, with its magnificent cathedral and the Bellver Castle perched on a hill at the back of the town.
In the north between Alcudia and C'an Picafort, you will find probably the best and safest beach on the island. Excellent for families, many of the hotels here are very much children focussed. There is plenty to do by day and night and an excellent waterpark.
Further north, Cala Millor offers a splendid beach with plenty to do day and night, it is also a good choice for families. The resorts of Sa Coma and Cala Bona are nearby.
For a more Spanish environment with less emphasis on nightlife, Cala D'or on the east coast is set around a number of sandy bays and inlets.
The resorts on the bay of Palma are arguably the most lively, but still good for families, with Magaluf and Palma Nova perhaps the best known. Here you will find good beaches, shops, bars, restaurants with excellent night life and entertainment.
Menorca
The island's relationship with Britain goes back to the days of Lord Nelson, with Mahon the capital having one of the finest natural harbours in the world. Not surprisingly then, they make Gin here as well! It is quieter here than the other two islands, so great for couples and indeed families. Mahon itself is lovely and very Spanish in style set alongside its magnificent harbour, lined with boats and many restaurants.
Cala n' Forcat is a short drive from Ciudadella going west, while to the north we have Arenal d'en Castell, a tranquil resort in a sheltered sandy bay with a good selection of hotel and apartment accommodation and golf nearby.
Ciudadella is a lovely historic town set around its own harbour with bars and restaurants full of character, a great place to visit in the evening.
To the east, nearest to Mahon we find the resorts of Punta Prima, S'Algar and Binibeca, perfect for a relaxing holiday while being close to the capital.
Between Cala Galdana and Ciudadella, the second town on the island, we have the resorts of Cala n'Bosch and Cala n' Blanes, both with their own cove type beaches and one of the largest concentrations of apartment complexes, built in the whitewashed local style by their pools.
Arguably , the best beaches are in the south at Son Bou and Santo Tomas, while at Cala Galdana we find a resort set on a wonderful beach sheltered by dramatic cliffs.
